What Is IFHP and Who Is Covered?

The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) provides temporary and limited health and dental benefits to:

  • Government-assisted refugees
  • Privately sponsored refugees
  • Refugee claimants
  • Protected persons

Dental care under IFHP is administered by Medavie Blue Cross, with strict guidelines on what is and isn’t covered.

Dental Services Covered Under IFHP at Bite Dental

Our downtown Toronto clinic provides many services that are covered under IFHP, including:

  • Emergency dental exams
  • Tooth extractions (uncomplicated cases)
  • X-rays for diagnostic and emergency purposes
  • Temporary fillings to relieve pain or stop decay
  • Treatment of infections and abscesses
  • Denture repairs and adjustments

Some procedures require pre-approval from Medavie Blue Cross, which our team will handle on your behalf.

Dental Services NOT Covered by IFHP

To help you plan your care, here’s a list of dental services that are NOT covered under the IFHP according to the official benefit grid:

  • Root canal treatments
  • Orthodontics (braces and aligners)
  • Intravenous sedation or nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
  • Prophylaxis and fluoride (routine cleanings)
  • Facility fees
  • Specialist fees (unless pre-approved for oral surgery or pediatric care)
  • Restoration of incipient lesions or cavities not visible on X-rays
  • Scaling and root planing (deep cleanings)

If you require non-covered services, our team will inform you upfront and discuss affordable private-pay options or referral support.
