Student Dentistry Plan: What You Need to Know
Get Ready for College with Adequate Dental Coverage
Are you preparing for college or university? Or are you already a student? If so, dental insurance might need to be higher on your list of priorities. However, if your parents’ plan does not cover you and your school does not provide one, a dental insurance plan is worth considering. Provincial health insurance for Canadian residents typically does not cover dental expenses. A Canadian dental insurance plan, such as a student dentistry plan, can ensure you get the care you need, minimize out-of-pocket costs, and help prevent future dental issues.
Accessing Dental Insurance as a Student
Here are a few ways to secure dental coverage if you are a college student:
- Your School: Many colleges and universities offer dental insurance (student dentistry plans) as part of their student health plans. These plans are often designed to be affordable for students, so check with your school’s health services for details.
- Your Employer: If you have a job, your employer might provide dental insurance as part of their health benefits package. The coverage and costs will depend on the specific plans offered by your employer.
- Your Parents: If your parents have dental insurance, you might be able to stay on their plan until the end of the year when you turn 26, depending on the terms of their policy.
- On Your Own: You can purchase your dental plan through health insurers or the marketplace. The coverage and costs will vary based on the plan you select.
Understanding Student Dentistry
Many individuals get dental insurance from their employers, but you may need to explore alternative options as a student. Your university might provide student dentistry plans if you are a full-time student. Several universities have insurance plans designed specifically for students, often including dental coverage.
Most students can access dental insurance through their universities, often included in tuition fees or offered at a low cost. For example, the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) provides student dentistry plans to all full-time students enrolled in post-secondary institutions in Ontario. These plans cover preventive care, basic dental care, and major dental procedures.
Bite Dental Clinic is part of the Student Care Dental Network, which offers college and university students discounts. Eligible students may pay $0 for checkups and teeth cleaning with their school dental insurance plan.
How Do Student Dentistry Plans Work?
The Student Care Dental Network includes various dental practitioners. You can receive an additional 20% to 30% discount on dental services by visiting a participating clinic, such as Bite Dental. This discount can cover up to 100% of your dental costs under the Dental Plan. For example, if you need to get your teeth implanted, visit our downtown dental implant office and take advantage of the benefits of the student dentistry plan.

Are Student Dentistry Plans Available at Universities in Canada?
Yes, many universities and colleges in Canada provide affordable dental plans with good coverage for students. Some examples include:
- McMaster Student Dental Insurance Plan: Accessible to all full-time undergraduate and graduate students at McMaster University.
- Ryerson Student Dental Insurance Plan: Available to all full-time and part-time students enrolled in Canadian post-secondary institutions.
- Carleton University Student Dental Insurance Plan: Accessible to all full-time undergraduate and graduate students at Carleton University.
Canadian Dental Care Plan vs. Students Dentistry Plan
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)is a federal insurance program that covers basic dental costs for uninsured Canadians with a household income under $90,000. Currently, CDCP is available for seniors aged 70 and above. So, it differs from student-specific coverage available at universities.
In contrast, dental care for students is specifically tailored for college students, providing them with dental coverage through their respective educational institutions.
Conclusion
Many universities and colleges offer students dentistry plans that cover 60-80% of dental costs. With Bite Dental offering an additional 20-30% discount, students can save up to 100% on their dental expenses.
Bite Dental is conveniently located in downtown Toronto, allowing easy access to the Canadian Dental Care Plan and student dental services. Feel free to contact us to make an appointment. Our experienced doctors are dedicated to ensuring your dental health.
